Newcastle United were linked with a move for Nicolas Pepe earlier this week.

According to Jeunes Footeux, Newcastle are among the clubs interested in signing the struggling Arsenal winger.

The Gunners smashed their transfer record on signing the £72 million attacker in 2019.

But 15 goals and eight assists in 67 Premier League games since then tells its own story.

And Arsenal legend Kevin Campbell believes that his old side are definitely going to sell the 26-year-old.

Campbell claims that in spite of his immense talent, the consistency just is not there.

He said via Curtis Shaw TV on YouTube: “We’re not saying Pepe isn’t talented because he’s immensely talented, but I think the consistency of his play is up and down. We can’t afford that. We can’t afford to have a player who blows hot and cold.

“For me, I think Nicolas Pepe will eventually be sold.”

Unwanted at St James’s Park

Even some Newcastle fans said on Twitter this week that they weren’t interested in the Ivory Coast international.

And when you consider how the Magpies are in a relegation battle this season, that speaks volumes.

Campbell is right in saying that Pepe has bags of potential. He has speed, tricks, dribbling and a wonderful left peg.

But the former Lille wide man just does not show it often enough and given that Mikel Arteta doesn’t even start him anymore, he does look on borrowed time.

Whether Newcastle are genuinely keen, however, remains to be seen.
