Helder Costa’s season has gone off the rails in recent months, but this summer he could be handed a real chance to resurrect his career at Leeds United.
It’s no secret that the Portuguese winger has been starved of been chances to impress lately, playing just 67 minutes of football since November, and while that must be frustrating for him, we can understand why Marcelo Bielsa hasn’t been playing him.
Indeed, Costa’s task hasn’t been made any easier by the emergence of Raphinha as one of the most important players in Leeds’ squad, and it’s been nigh on impossible for Bielsa to drop the Brazilian.
Unfortuantely for the Argentine, that decision may be taken out of his hands this summer.
It has been reported this week that Liverpool are planning on signing Raphinha in the summer, and while that may be a nightmare for Leeds, it should be music to the ears of Costa.
If Raphinha goes, the Portugal international will once again move up the pecking order at Leeds, and if this move does come to fruition, he will have the perfect chance to resurrect his fledgling career at Leeds.
It’s been reported by Phil Hay that Leeds may be open to selling Costa this summer, but if Raphinha goes, he will once again become an important player at the club, and if he impresses, there’s no reason why he once again can’t become Bielsa’s first-choice right-winger.
He’s got the talent to be a player at this level, he managed to get a goal and an assist in his first two appearances this season, and he’s been described as ‘immense’ by his former manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
Raphinha leaving the club would undoubtedly be bad news for Leeds, but if he does leave, Costa needs to make sure Bielsa is looking towards him as a replacement.
