Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has praised defender Ciaran Clark as being ‘immaculate’ against Blackburn Rovers last night.

The Magpies were back at St James’ Park on Tuesday night having beaten West Ham United 2-0 away from home on Saturday.

Last night’s performance wasn’t quite as impressive, but Newcastle did still win, with Ryan Fraser hitting the winner on his debut.

Newcastle faced major pressure from Blackburn, but they stood strong and claimed the win whilst keeping a clean sheet.

Mark Gillespie came in for praise for his performance, and boss Bruce hailed centre back Clark for his display.

The 30-year-old only managed 14 Premier League appearances last season, and hadn’t played since picking up an ankle injury against Arsenal in February.

Clark started against Blackburn, and Bruce told the club’s official Twitter account that he felt the Irishman was ‘immaculate’.

Bruce added that Clark was ‘the big one’ for him last night because he hasn’t played for so long, but turned in such a great performance – and he’s surely put himself in contention for Premier League action with that display.
