Aston Villa have joined the race for FC Barcelona attacker Philippe Coutinho, who is likely to leave the La Liga giants this January.
According to Goal Brasil, Steven Gerrard’s side are interested in signing the former Liverpool star, with the Reds and Tottenham also chasing Coutinho this month.
Barcelona have to sell in the January window, and Coutinho is one of the big names on the chopping block for Xavi Hernandez’s side. The Catalan side signed the playmaker four years ago for a club-record fee of £142m according to BBC Sport.
With the attacker in the last 18 months of his Barcelona contract, Coutinho looks set to leave the Nou Camp this month, and Villa are now reportedly chasing the Brazilian.
Indeed, Gerrard and Coutinho played together for Liverpool in the 2013/14 season where the Reds came close to lifting the Premier League title. And now, the duo could be reunited at Villa Park.
It would take a momentous financial effort for Villa to lure Coutinho to the club. However, with Gerrard at the helm, the Liverpool link could be enough to win the playmaker to the Premier League side this month.
And on social media, Villa fans are in disbelief that Gerrard’s side are now chasing Coutinho, especially given the finances that would be involved with such a deal.
