With a month left in the summer transfer window, that’s what’ll be occupying Newcastle United supporters’ minds.

It’s been a decent window for the Magpies, particularly after finally signing Sven Botman following a relatively lengthy pursuit that began during the January one.

Another player Newcastle were heavily linked to during the winter was a certain Julian Alvarez.

And those at St James’s Park must be gutted that they failed to get him.

The 22-year-old Argentine wound up joining Manchester City, with Gazzetta dello Sport claiming earlier in 2022 that the North-East outfit were readying a ‘mega offer’ for Alvarez.

In the end, Pep Guardiola’s side won the race and a tweet from Fabrizio Romano will sum up Newcastle’s regret.

According to the Italian journalist, City only invested around £16 million to sign Alvarez and, based on Saturday’s activity, he probably is now worth a fortune.

That’s because he scored on his competitive debut in the Community Shield defeat by Liverpool at The King Power Stadium.

And Romano is right, that £16 million outlay is going to look like peanuts very, very soon – if it doesn’t already.

Not that Newcastle can have too much regret because, after all, why would he join Eddie Howe’s side if the Premier League champions were interested?

But even still, those at St James’s Park will still be disappointed that it didn’t materialise.
