For a while, Oliver Skipp wasn’t seen as the most exciting academy player coming out of Tottenham Hotspur.
Well, it’s difficult to be the biggest prospect when you’re coming through at the same time as Marcus Edwards, somebody who Mauricio Pochettino compared to Lionel Messi which, by the manager’s own admission, was a mistake.
But in terms of substance, Skipp may just be Tottenham’s most exciting young player now.
The Championship is a difficult division and one separates the wheat from the chaff very quickly.
But Skipp, on loan at Norwich City, has started 43 of a possible 44 league games in helping the Canaries to Premier League promotion this season.
Edwards joined Norwich on loan from the Lilywhites too back in 2018, but he managed only six minutes in total.
Indeed, Skipp has been a bonafide success story at Carrow Road and there was further evidence of that on Thursday when the Championship leaders announced that he’d been voted third in their Player of the Year awards.
The Tottenham product was presented with a wee trophy to mark the occasion, with Grant Hanley finishing second and Emiliano Buendia winning the main prize.
Here’s how some fans of the North London club reacted to Skipp’s award:
There may be room for Skipp next season, no matter who the manager is.
Under now-sacked Jose Mourinho, Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko certainly looked like they were heading for the exit and that may well remain the case, with Daniel Levy calling the shots on transfers.
They are both midfield players and without the pair in North London, there is a potential avenue for Skipp to flourish with the senior side.
