Harry Kane could leave Tottenham this summer.
The thought of the Spurs talisman leaving north London is incredibly scary for a number of reasons, but losing your star player isn’t always the death sentence it initially looks to be.
Indeed, Liverpool improved after selling Philippe Coutinho, Chelsea haven’t been hit that hard by the sale of Eden Hazard, while Leicester have become a better side since selling Harry Maguire.
However, there’s reason to believe that selling Kane, even for a big fee, would be an absolute disaster at Tottenham, and there’s a picture that proves it.
Spurs have been here before. They sold Gareth Bale for a world record fee back in 2013 and when tasked with replacing the Welshman, it’s fair to say that Daniel Levy wasted the windfall.
Spurs signed the seven above players with the money they received from Real Madrid for Bale, and it’s fair to say that the money wasn’t put to good use.
Roberto Soldado, Paulinho and Vlad Chriches have to be described as abject failures at Tottenham, and while Erik Lamela has carved out a decent career in north London, he’s not hit the heights expected of him.
Ettiene Capoue and Nacer Chadli showed promise at time during their spell in north London, but they didn’t establish themselves as key players for Tottenham.
The pick of the bunch was certainly Christian Eriksen, but even the Dane’s form was patchy and he was sold for a minimal profit last January.
If Kane goes for a huge fee this summer, can Tottenham fans trust Levy to spend the cash they receive responsibly? His shopping spree in the summer of 2013 certainly suggests they can’t.
