Cody Gakpo has signed for Liverpool.
The Dutch winger’s arrival at Anfield has been announced on social media, and the Reds made it a festive themed announcement, stating that Gakpo is a late Christmas present for the Reds.
Any observant Liverpool fan may have noticed that this isn’t the first time that we’ve seen a tweet like this at this time of year.
Indeed, back in 2017, Liverpool announced the signing of Virgil van Dijk on the 27th of December using a photo of the defender holding a Liverpool shirt next to a Christmas tree in a similar way to Gakpo.
Make no mistake about it, this was done knowingly.
A Dutch star joining the club just after Christmas, the chance to recreate this iconic van Dijk image was simply too good to miss.
Factor in that Gakpo has now admitted that van Dijk actually played a part in getting the striker to Anfield, and it’s clear to see that the announcement of van Dijk in 2017 inspired this picture that has been used to unveil Gakpo in 2022.
Of course, whether or not Gakpo proves to be a Christmas present that is worth the wait remains to be seen.
He looks to be a real star in the making based on his performances in the Eredivisie, but he has a lot to live up to if he’s going to continue to live up to the van Dijk comparisons.
As we all know, van Dijk is undoubtedly one of the greatest players in Liverpool’s history, and if Gakpo goes on to be even half as good as the former Southampton man, he’ll be a star.
