Matthias Ginter has cast doubt on his future at Borussia Monchengladbach with Tottenham Hotspur keen to take the World Cup winner to the Premier League, while speaking to Gladbach Live.
You’d think, given that he will become a free agent in just nine months, Gladbach would be leaving nothing to chance, thrusting a biro into Ginter’s hands and a freshly-printed contract in front of his face.
But, according to sporting director Max Eberl, there is a very good reason why one of the Bundesliga’s finest centre-halves has not been offered an extension at Borussia Park.
Not yet, anyway.
“Well, we actually couldn’t make an adequate offer to Matthias Ginter as a German national player,” the director explained, in conversation with Sport1.
“We just didn’t have the financial means at the time.”
Eberl would add that, with fans flooding back to the stands and the COVID-19 pandemic on the retreat, Gladbach may soon be in a position to open talks with Ginter at last.
For now, however, there remains a window of opportunity for the likes of Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur, all of whom have been linked with the former Dortmund youngster via Calciomercato.

“No, he (Eberl) has not yet contacted me. I am curious. But he has also explained why he has not yet been able to make an offer,” Ginter said when quizzed about his future.
“No, there is no such day (when contract talks are scheduled to begin). But I don’t think it will take until spring.
“I know that many contracts at Borussia will expire next year. It remains to be seen when we will sit down.
“There aren’t really any plans yet. Of course, I’m worried because the contract is about to expire and no concrete offer has yet been made. But I’ve never talked about other clubs.
“As long as I wear the Gladbach jersey, it would be unfair and disrespectful to speak publicly about other clubs. I’ll see what happens in the next few weeks. I’m relatively relaxed about the situation.”
Can you really be ‘relaxed’ and ‘worried’ at the same time? Apparently so.
Ginter, who has been compared to Sergio Ramos by Germany legend Lothar Matthaus, was valued at £20 million during the most recent transfer window.
