Gareth Bale returning to Tottenham was a dream come true for many Spurs supporters. The Welshman was a superstar at White Hart Lane all those years ago and, now he’s back, fans are hoping for big things.
Tottenham haven’t won a trophy for more than a decade. With a serial winner like Jose Mourinho at the helm and with four-time Champions League winner Bale back, Spurs will be looking to end that drought.
Former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp urged Tottenham to bring another one of their former players back last month – Luka Modric (read more here) – and the Real Madrid man has now responded.
Modric told FourFourTwo Magazine’s November edition: “I’m too old to go back to Tottenham.
“I still have a year left in Madrid and then we’ll see what happens. I feel good and I want to continue playing football for a few more years. I’m focused on Madrid and the things we can achieve this season.
“Afterwards, I will sit down to talk to the management and we will look for a suitable solution for everyone.
“I have forged a good relationship with all the people of the club and, no matter what happens, there will be no problem.”
Modric was an incredible player for Tottenham. The Croatian played 160 games for Spurs in all competitions, scoring 17 goals and providing 27 assists in four seasons.
He joined Real Madrid in 2012 and has gone on to achieve great things for the Galacticos – individually as well as for the club. Modric won the Ballon d’Or, FIFA’s best player and UEFA’s best player awards in 2018.
He, like Bale, won two two league titles and four Champions Leagues at Madrid and remains one of the best midfielders in the world. However, Modric is 35 and it seems unlikely he’ll return to Tottenham.
Spurs have a lot of variety in central midfield and, after breaking their wage structure for Bale already, it’s unlikely Daniel Levy will agree to cover Modric’s massive wages when he turns 36 next year.
