Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, journalist Ian McGarry has claimed that Celtic have already been discussing who will replace Neil Lennon, claiming that Eddie Howe’s name has been suggested.
The journalist was discussing the ongoing situation at Celtic Park after Neil Lennon’s departure, and he says that the Bhoys have discussed two scenarios and two names.
“In terms of who the next manager will be? From what I’m told that Celtic and the directors and the owner Dermot Desmond, the majority shareholder, are discussing two scenarios,” McGarry said.
“One is a project, that is that they need a head coach who comes in and rebuilds form the bottom up as it were, and by that I mean what has become increasingly evident in Scottish football is that you rely on Scottish players and academy players coming through, and Celtic have been doing that.
“Rangers to an extent not so much, but they’ve certainly not been spending as much because the budget is not there, so what you need is coaching talent in that sense in order to produce results and win you domestic titles.
“Or they g for someone who is an established coach already, managers who have been talked about so far are Steve Clarke, the head coach of the Scottish national team who would be an obvious choice, very impressive progress there and he’s seen Scotland reaching a major championship finals for the first time since 1998. The first Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe, or as we like to call him, Eddie Why? Has also been mentioned as well.”
Aside from the fact that McGarry’s nickname for Howe is questionable, this is a very interesting update.
Clarke and Howe represent two real opposite ends of the spectrum. Clarke is the seasoned veteran who has managed in Scotland for a number of years, while Howe is the highly-rated youngster who hasn’t really spread his wings beyond Bournemouth yet.
Whether or not either of these two managers ends up being appointed remains to be seen.
