Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has given an update on Mohamed Salah’s situation at Liverpool.
Salah has been making all sorts of headlines in recent weeks, being spoken about as one of the best players on the planet, and inevitably, that’s led to speculation about his future.
Salah is yet to sign a new contract at Liverpool, and with his current deal expiring in 2023, the clock is ticking for the Egyptian.
Romano says that PSG showed an interest this summer, and he says that the Ligue 1 outfit could try again once Kylian Mbappe leaves, which, after his comments this week, looks inevitable.
What’s been said?
“I can tell you, from what I’m told, PSG were looking at this possibility earlier in the summer in like June, if they’d sold Mbappe to Real Madrid, they were prepared to do something big and they wanted to try for Mo Salah. Also, from Liverpool, they didn’t have any intention to open talks to sell Salah. It was never a negotiation because of Liverpool’s position and also PSG’s situation with Mbappe,” Romano said.
The journalist then gave an update on Salah’s contract.
“He’s still negotiating with Liverpool. From what I’m told he loves Liverpool, he loves Liverpool as a football club, the fans, the city, everything. But a new contract is not agreed yet. I would keep an eye on some clubs this summer if some players move in the summer, like Mbappe and these kind of players, they will try again, but from now until next summer, Liverpool’s priority will be to extend Salah’s contract.”
Battle
Liverpool may face a real battle to keep hold of Salah this summer if PSG come calling.
No club in the world can offer the financial package PSG can, and while the Reds are a more historic club, it has to be said that PSG may have a better chance of winning the Champions League right now. After all, they do have the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar.
Liverpool will try very hard to get Salah tied down to new terms, but if PSG are sniffing around, it may be a tough task to convince him to stay.
