Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Rangers are already progressing well in terms of their transfer meetings ahead of the summer window – between Ross Wilson, the board and Ibrox boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
Rangers looked back to their best on Sunday evening after a 4-0 win over St. Mirren at Paisley. Kemar Roofe scored a brilliant hat-trick, netting in the first two minutes and the last few seconds of the first half.
He completed his hat-trick on 50 minutes, while Joe Aribo curled a gorgeous left-footed effort into the top corner late on. But there are plenty of issues to be sorted out at Ibrox in terms of transfers and current stars, this summer.
John Souttar will join a free, but five players are currently leaving in June when their contracts expire – Connor Goldson, Scott Arfield, Leon Balogun, Allan McGregor and Steven Davis. Balogun has the option of another year.
Some incomings are expected with Celtic likely to go on and win the title. Jones has told Give Me Sport that Rangers are progressing well with transfer talks and have pinpointed their targets, ahead of the window.
“From what I’m told, Rangers are quite far ahead in terms of deciding the exact positions and the personnel they want to fill certain roles. So, I think it’s going to be really interesting what happens over the next few months.”
Jones on Rangers: What does GVB need at Ibrox this summer?
If the aforementioned five players are expected to leave, as well as Aaron Ramsey and Amad Diallo who remains on loan, then the Gers need major surgery to put them on a level par with Celtic in the coming months.
Along with Souttar, another centre-back or two is key. McGregor needs replacing between the sticks. A creative midfielder to take the pressure off of Aribo with Ramsey going. Ianis Hagi will return this summer.
But at least five big-name signings are required to push Rangers back on a level playing field. Perhaps, selling a big player for some cash to spend elsewhere might happen – Glen Kamara, Alfredo Morelos or another.
