Liverpool kicked off their summer transfer business on Friday by signing Ibrahima Konate.
The big French centre-back has joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig.
But now the big question is, is he going to start in Jurgen Klopp’s best XI?
By the time next season comes around, the Reds are likely to have Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip fit again.
But considering Klopp plays with only two centre-backs, that means two of those four players is going to miss out on regular football most weeks.
That being said, club legend Steve Nicol is confident that Konate – who set Liverpool back £36 million – is going to be starting alongside Van Dijk, ahead of Gomez and Matip.
Asked on ESPN about the situation, he said: “Right now if I’m putting my money on anything, I’m telling you Konate starts ahead of Gomez. The only way Gomez will get ahead of Konate is if he’s ready to go on the first day of pre-season and does well.”
Van Dijk safe?
Really, it’s a massive pre-season for Liverpool and even Van Dijk won’t be counting his chickens.
Being a £75 million defender, yes the Dutchman can probably expect to slot straight back into Klopp’s XI as soon as he’s fit.
But that doesn’t mean he won’t have to work hard to earn it.
It’s Klopp’s job to win football matches, not be a friend to his players, and if the German feels that a combination of Konate and Gomez is Liverpool’s best partnership that’s how it’s going to be.
