It’s been a difficult time for Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette lately.
The Frenchman had a shocker in his last appearance for the Gunners – a 3-0 defeat by Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium.
And despite being Arsenal’s top goalscorer in the Premier League this season with three, quite a lot of supporters have called on Mikel Arteta to drop Lacazette and play Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a central role.
But as a former striker himself, Kevin Campbell is a big fan of the 29-year-old and claims that he doesn’t command anywhere near as much respect as he perhaps deserves.
He told The Highbury Squad podcast on YouTube: “I see the work that Lacazette does and many don’t give him the respect that he deserves. I’m telling you now, he does a lot of unsung work. A couple of seasons ago he was our player of the season! It’s amazing how quickly people can turn on people.”
If we’re honest, Lacazette being Arsenal’s top scorer in the Premier League this season is more a reflection on the team than it is the player himself.
Even more damning, his last goal in this competition came in the 3-1 defeat by Liverpool, which was in September.
In nearly two months, nobody in Arteta’s side has been able to leapfrog Lacazette in the goal charts.
It’s even more of a bad look for Aubameyang who, before a ball was kicked this season, was tipped to challenge for the Golden Boot, as he has done in his last two full seasons in North London.
