Martin O’Neill has suggested that Nuno Espirito Santo may have been a bit quick on the trigger when he killed off Joe Hart’s career at Tottenham Hotspur.
The veteran goalkeeper left Spurs earlier this month after only one season in North London.
Hart, who has won two Premier League titles with Manchester City, joined Celtic in a £1 million deal.
There were only a number of weeks between Nuno’s appointment at Tottenham and Hart’s departure to Glasgow.
And O’Neill has admitted that he was surprised to see the Portuguese coach do away with the former England international so quickly.
He told Stadium Astro: “Sometimes I’m surprised. For instance Nuno has come in and made a big decision on Hart for a start. He wouldn’t really know Hart too well. He’d obviously know of his ability.”
Nuno knows
It’s worth pointing out that Nuno already a second-in-command for Hugo Lloris in North London after Pierluigi Gollini was signed on loan from Atalanta.
That decision pushed Hart – who never made a Premier League appearance for Tottenham – further down the pecking order and at that point it made complete sense to leave.
With that being said, Nuno clearly knows what he’s doing at Spurs.
On Sunday, his side beat Watford 1-0 in North London to move top of the Premier League and not only that, but this is the first time in the club’s history that they’ve won their first three top-flight games without conceding a goal.
The former Wolves boss has enjoyed a stunning start to life at the Lilywhites and criticising him for offloading Hart makes very little sense at the moment, it has to be said.
