Speaking on the Sky Sports Pitch to Post podcast, Jamie Redknapp has tipped Liverpool to sign a centre-back this summer.
The Reds have been linked with a number of new defenders, with the likes of Ibrahima Konate and Duje Caleta-Car linked, and while those are just rumours at the moment, Redknapp says he’s certain that they’ll look to bring in a new defender.
“I think certainly defensively they’ll be looking for a centre-back, I think they did the right thing not going out and spending money on someone who they didn’t know was going to be a complete success,” Redknapp said.
“When you’ve got the likes of Gomez and van Dijk, you have to be assured that they’re going to be a top players, so once you get through this period and into the summer, that will be your partnership again, so you may need someone who’s just going to take the pressure off them if there’s another injury to one of them, but that’s an area I’m sure they’re going to address.”
It seems to be a safe bet to assume that Liverpool will bring in a new defender this summer.
The Reds have been caught short this season with injuries to both Gomez and van Dijk causing them all sorts of problems, and they will be keen to avoid that happening again.
Who this defender will be remains to be seen, but this is certainly a situation to keep an eye on in the coming months.
