‘I’m sure he’ll go’: Former president thinks Tottenham will sign title-winning star

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon believes the time is right for Gareth Bale to make a return to Tottenham Hotspur, speaking to Sky Sports.

By the time Spurs take to the field for Sunday’s Premier League clash at Southampton, they could have a Welsh wing wizard in their ranks, chomping at the bit to make a success of his second spell in north London.

ESPN reports Tottenham are closing in on a deal that would see Bale rejoin the club he left in a world-record £86 million deal seven years ago.

The 31-year-old has won pretty much everything there is to win in the Spanish capital, including four Champions League titles and two La Liga crowns, all the while scoring 105 goals in 251 games – a remarkable record for a wide player.

But the one-time Galactico is little more than a £600,000-a-week benchwarmer these days and Calderon believes the time is right to cut ties.

“I think it’s the time to finish this ordeal for the player but also for Real Madrid. It would be time for everyone. The club who hires Gareth Bale would have a really good player,” says Calderon.

“If it’s Tottenham that he wants to go to, I’m sure he’ll go there.

“I suppose it will be (a permanent deal). He has two years left on his contract so if he leaves this season, I feel he would stay at the new club for the rest of his career. He has three or four more years at a good level so, if he goes to Tottenham, maybe he will finish his career there.

“I don’t know if Dele Alli will be part of the deal, but I don’t think Tottenham would want to let him go as he’s a very good player. Any big team would want to have him in their side.”

The Telegraph suggested on Tuesday that Alli, who continues to look a shadow of his once brilliant self, could be heading to Madrid as part of the deal.

Meanwhile, Sergio Reguilon could be joining Bale on a private jet bound for the English capital with Marca claiming that arguably Europe’s next-best left-back is set to join Mourinho’s ranks in a bargain £25 million deal.

“(He) is a player I really like. He had a fantastic season with Sevilla,” Calderon adds.

“There is now a controversy about whether he must come to play for Real Madrid or whether he must be transferred. This is a moment where there are a lot of options open.”
