Speaking on the House of Champions Podcast, Fabrizio Romano has been discussing the Sporting Director role at Liverpool.
Julian Ward sent shockwaves through the footballing world this week as it was reported that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.
Ward’s departure has come as a bit of a shock as he’s only taken over from Michael Edwards relatively recently, and now, the future of Liverpool’s recruitment strategy is up in the air.
According to The Telegraph, Liverpool are considering a rethink of their model, while The Guardian state that the Sporting Director role could be scrapped entirely.
However, according to Romano, Liverpool will stick with the Sporting Director role and he says that they will want someone who will work on a long-term project at the club alongside Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool want long-term solution
Romano spoke about Liverpool’s plans.
“It’s surprising. Honestly with Liverpool it is surprising because Julian Ward was the man prepared to change the Liverpool project after the era of Michael Edwards, but now he’s going to step down at the end of the season. It’s a big change for Liverpool and I’m sure that they want to make sure their next director is someone who will work on a long-term project together with Jurgen Klopp. Something is definitely changing for Liverpool,” Romano said.
Rebuild needed
Liverpool are certainly a team in a transition phase right now, and this appointment of a new Sporting Director may be the biggest decision they make in years.
Indeed, whoever comes in will have to have a long-term vision in mind of where to take this team and how to do it.
Of course, figuring out how to take a football club forward and keep them competitive is easier said than done.
The right candidate is out there, Liverpool just need to find him now.
