John Aldridge told Sky Sports on Monday afternoon that Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri need to leave Liverpool this summer.
The Liverpool legend pointed out that the forward line needs ‘freshening up’ and thinks players like Origi and Shaqiri also need to move on for their own game time.
Both have been fringe players during Jurgen Klopp’s tenure and really struggled to become regulars during a dominant period for the club.
But after a little slip-up during this campaign, which ended well in Liverpool securing third, Aldridge shared where the changes need to be made in the summer transfer market.
“Up front, we have some fantastic forwards,” said Aldridge. “Four strikers, including Jota, who is magnificent.
“But I think it needs freshening up. I think Origi might need to leave. He needs game time, as does Shaqiri, I am sure.
“So, there will be some toing and froing (in the summer). But it’s the spine of the team, for me. Whether the owners have the money after what’s happened in the last 12 months is another question.
“But certainly, I think we need a top striker, a top centre-half and a top midfield player and they don’t come cheap.”
If Origi does stay on at Anfield next season then, just like other seasons, the 26-year-old will only be warming the bench.
And given that he plays for a club the size of Liverpool, it will no doubt carry some weight in trying to sell him to potential suitors in the Premier League or abroad.
The same can be said for Shaqiri, who moved to Anfield from relegated-Stoke in 2018, and is another who needs to get his career back on track.
