Christian Eriksen has told Gazzetta Dello Sport that he does not yet know if reported Tottenham Hotspur target Antonio Conte is staying at Inter Milan, but praised the Italian coach nonetheless.
Conte has just broken Juventus’s stranglehold on Italian football by delivering a Serie A title for Inter.
Eriksen, who joined the San Siro club from Tottenham in January of 2020, played a big role in their title over the past few months, having struggled for regular football under the Italian for much of his stint.
According to Corriere dello Sport, the former Chelsea coach has met with Spurs officials over becoming Jose Mourinho’s replacement in North London, with Daniel Levy firing the Portuguese coach a couple of weeks ago.
Here’s what Eriksen told Gazzetta [print edition May 7, page 2 and 3] about the Tottenham-linked coach:
He said: “I’m so happy with Antonio Conte now, 6 months ago I had chances to leave the club but everything has changed… and I want to stay. I don’t know if Conte is staying at Inter or not, it’s up to him and to the club, they’ll decide together.”
What an appointment this would be for Tottenham Hotspur.
We’re talking about someone who has won five league titles during his career – including one with Chelsea in 2017 – and what a brilliant replacement for Mourinho he would be.
He might feel as if his work at San Siro is done and another project may well appeal to him, but time will tell whether that project is located in North London or not.
