West Ham fans have taken to Twitter to react after some difficult news about Michail Antonio emerged following the 4-2 win over Newcastle.
What’s the story?
Well, Michael Ricketts – Chief of the Jamaican Football Federation – told the Jamaica Star that Antonio’s documentation has been sorted.
The £7m striker has decided to stop waiting for a call-up from Gareth Southgate, and instead pledge his alliance to Jamaica.
The Jamaica Star quote Ricketts as saying: “I think the coaches met on Saturday evening, so we are expecting that there will be an announcement as it pertains to the 23 that will be (selected). With his documentation now in place, I have reason to think that he (Antonio) ought to be in the squad going to Mexico.”
Now, this is terrible news for David Moyes.
As Football London state, Jamaica have FIFA World Cup qualifiers to deal with, which could see Antonio play eight extra games before 2022.
Given the fact he’s already quite injury prone, this is a real concern.
West Ham simply have to buy a striker
Even if Antonio wasn’t heading off with Jamaica, why oh why haven’t West Ham signed a new striker yet?
The £70,000-a-week forward sadly cannot be relied on, as he can’t seem to stay injury free throughout a whole season.
Sebastien Haller provided depth, but he left to join Ajax back in January.
How the Irons haven’t signed a replacement for him yet is bizarre.
There’s just over a week until the transfer window ends, and if the east Londoners can’t find a new forward, the 2021/22 season could be a tough one.
