West Ham United boss David Moyes has waxed lyrical about goalkeeper Krisztian Hegyi, as per football.london.
The Hammers Under-21 captain earned his first call-up to the Hungary senior squad this week.
It is just reward for Hegyi’s progress at West Ham since joining the London Stadium outfit in 2019.
The 20-year-old has made 21 appearances for the Hammers in the Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy this term.
Hegyi has also made multiple matchday squads for West Ham’s senior team, including in the Premier League.
Now, the 6ft 4in stopper has been named in Marco Rossi’s 25-man team for Hungary’s upcoming two fixtures.
The 1954 and 1974 World Cup finalists face Estonia in a friendly on Thursday 23 March in Budapest.
Hungary then get their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign under way against Bulgaria on Sunday 27 March.
As with the Estonia friendly, this will take place at the Puskas Arena Park.
West Ham are actually playing their last game before the international break on Thursday.
The Hammers face AEK Larnaca in their Europa Conference League’s round of 16 second leg tie.
West Ham’s Premier League meeting with Manchester City this weekend has been postponed due to the FA Cup.
‘Really important’
Ahead of the Larnaca match, Moyes was asked about Hegyi’s call-up.
“I have to say, Xavi the goalkeeping coach works really hard with the goalkeepers,” began the West Ham boss.
“And he’s got a little bit of a conveyor belt of how he sees it going and he’s done a job of trying to develop the goalkeepers and he’s keen on them.
“It’s quite a long process to be a goalkeeper, it’s only one position and trying to get in the team.
“When do you put them out on loan and when are they ready etc, so it’s actually quite a job to get the goalkeepers to.
“I’m really pleased for Eggy, as we call him, he’s doing well, he’s a big lad and he’s improving.
“We’re pleased for him and it’s a big thing to get called up for your national team, you’re a young player. It’s really important.”
Congratulations to Hegyi for his call-up. A big moment for him as he gets the chance to represent his country.
He has really done well in the West Ham ranks and is now in and around the first team.
Hopefully Hegyi continues to improve and potentially become a regular option in claret and blue.
