Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, Joe Gelhardt has admitted that he still doesn’t know what his best position is on the football pitch.
Gelhardt was one of the stars of Leeds’ U23 side’s incredible 2019/20 campaign, but he never truly held down one role, often switching between playing as a centre-forward and as a number 10.
The former Wigan man says he’s really not sure what his best position is, but he claims that Marcelo Bielsa thinks he’s a striker.
What’s been said?
Gelhardt was asked what his best position on the pitch is.
“I’m not sure myself,” he replied.
“The manager pulled me for a chat and he sees me as a nine. At the start of the season I was playing a bit deeper in the 10 role but I’m easy, I don’t mind whatever position. I think he sees me as a nine so in training and in the games recently with the 23s I’ve been playing there. I like either.”

Good trait
Gelhardt sounds like a very versatile player, and that’s a great trait to have, especially in this Leeds team.
Another player who can play as either a striker or as a number 10 is Rodrigo Moreno, and he’s proven to be a key asset for Leeds, and perhaps Gelhardt could follow in his footsteps.
The youngster is still awaiting his first-team debut at Elland Road, but it seems as though we should expect to see him play as a number nine when he is introduced to the senior side as that’s where Gelhardt says Bielsa wants him to play.
