Jamie Carragher has told the Super 6 Podcast that he is unsure whether Diogo Jota will actually ever become first choice at Liverpool.

Jota made a roaring start to his Liverpool career after arriving from Wolves, as he hit nine goals in his first 17 appearances.

It looked as if the Portuguese international would have a crucial role to play at Anfield this term.

However, Jota has now been ruled out for months with injury, and still has not returned.

And Carragher feels that Liverpool do need to be another striker, as he isn’t sure if Jota will actually ever be able to play more than a covering role with the Reds.

“I think when you talk about tweaking in the summer they need to bring in one or two players in the summer,” Carragher said.

“They need to bring in a centre-back in, whether that’s Kabak who’s there on loan.

“But they definitely need to bring a goalscorer in. I don’t know exactly what position for – I’m not sure if I mean a centre-forward or a midfield player, because Liverpool don’t score any goals from midfield.

“At the moment they are massively reliant on Salah and Mane and nobody else looks like they are going to score so Jota has been a miss, but whether Jota will ever be first choice in a Liverpool team, I’m not sure yet.”

Carragher’s comments may surprise some Liverpool fans, given his brilliant start to life on Merseyside.

Before he got injured there were calls for Jota to replace Roberto Firmino in Liverpool’s first choice team, and that still remains a possibility when he does come back, as the Brazilian has not been in sparkling form this year.

If Jota does get a run of games up-front, then it remains to be seen whether he can score the volume of goals required to reduce Liverpool’s need for a number nine in the summer.
