Neither Arsenal or Tottenham Hotspur managed to win in the Premier League this weekend.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has told the London Evening Standard that he cannot give up on the Premier League title, even if Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino may have done.
The Gunners suffered disappointment on Saturday evening, as two Jesse Lingard goals helped Manchester United claim an impressive 3-1 win at the Emirates Stadium.
With Manchester City claiming a narrow 2-1 victory over West Ham United on Sunday afternoon, meaning Arsenal now sit 15 points adrift of the Premier League leaders.
North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur could only muster a 1-1 draw at Watford on Saturday afternoon, and they lie 18 points off top spot having previously been considered as a contender for City.
With just two points from four games since the international break, Tottenham are struggling for form, and that has led to manager Mauricio Pochettino almost pulling out of the title race.
Last weekend, following the 1-1 home draw with West Bromwich Albion, Pochettino told Sky Sports that he felt Spurs were too far behind to be considered as a contender for the title – and they were only 10 points adrift of City then, compared to 18 now.
Given that City have dropped just two points this season, it’s currently hard to see Pep Guardiola’s men giving up their lead at the top – but Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger isn’t giving up just yet.
Wenger told the London Evening Standard that he cannot send out any other message than one of hope in terms of a title challenge – a seemingly thinly-veiled jab at North London rival Pochettino.
“I’m not Pochettino. I’m Arsene Wenger,” said Pochettino. “I’m here to fight as long as I can. As long as mathematically it’s possible you have to fight. You cannot give any other message out,” he added.
