Dominic Calvert-Lewin asked a Sky reporter during his England press conference ‘are you picking the team’ after it was suggested to him that he won’t start for England because of Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

The Tottenham hitman has led the line for the Three Lions at Euro 2020, with Everton’s leaping forward playing a back-up role.

Even though Kane is yet to get off the mark during this tournament, there’s no way Gareth Southgate will drop the Spurs man for the visit of Germany on Tuesday.

Although, others have previously called for Calvert-Lewin to get picked ahead of Kane because of the poor performances he has put in.

Nonetheless, when Sky reporter, Kaveh Solhekol, told Calvert-Lewin ‘realistically’ he won’t start for his country unless Kane is unavailable, he issued this brilliant response:

“Are you picking the team,” asked Calvert-Lewin with a grin on his face. “I am not here to say who is going to play and who is not going to play.

“For me, it’s about being ready when I am needed and staying sharp in training if I am called upon.

“Harry’s the captain and the number nine, at the moment. He’s the man leading the line. I will support him 100% and make sure I am ready when needed.”

Whilst many have questioned Kane’s performances during this tournament, the problem doesn’t lie with him, but the system around him.

During the first 45 minutes against the Czech Republic, with Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka on the field, England looked more lively, sharp and creative going forward.

And to the surprise of nobody, Kane was a lot more involved, unlike the previous games where chances were hardly created for the Premier League’s highest goalscorer and he ended up looking anonymous.

It’s simple really, get men around Kane, allow runners beyond the Spurs man, feed him in the final third and he will eventually start showcasing his goalscoring talents.
