Willian has conceded that he hasn’t exactly set the Premier League alight since joining Arsenal from Chelsea last summer.
Arsenal won the race to sign the Brazil international ahead of Tottenham Hotspur and others, following his release by the Stamford Bridge club.
The Gunners signed him up to a £220,000-a-week deal over the course of a three-year contract.
But despite his experience, it’s been a dismal first season for Willian at Arsenal and zero goals and seven assists across all competitions reflects that.
It’s certainly a decent number of assists, but we’re talking about over the course of 30 matches and even the player himself has admitted that he hasn’t been brilliant since moving to the Emirates Stadium.
Willian, who could start against Slavia Prague in the Europa League tonight, told Football London before the game in North London: “A lot of ups and downs we know that I’m the first to recognise that. I’m not having a good season. The last few games that I played I was playing much better but I think it was not enough.”
Expensive mistake?
Yes, Willian was a free transfer but, as pointed out, he’s earning huge money.
He could potentially cost Arsenal £30 million in wages alone over the course of his contract and as things stand, he just isn’t pulling his weight.
Willian absolutely has ability, but it is admittedly quite hard to see him ever justifying the sort of salary that Edu has put him on, it has to be said.
