Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol is not convinced by Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Micky van de Ven.
Tottenham only signed Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg earlier this month, but Nicol has suggested that they may already need an upgrade.
When discussing the style of football Ange Postecoglou has brought to Tottenham and the 57-year-old’s central defence, Nicol said on ESPN: “I think it’s sustainable if they can try and make a couple of signings defensively. I’m not convinced of Van de Ven.”
Van de Ven was able to help Tottenham keep a clean sheet last time out, with the north London outfit defeating Manchester United 2-0 at home.
Postecoglou will now be hoping for more of the same from his backline when they travel to the Vitality Stadium to take on Bournemouth on Saturday.
Too early to judge Micky van de Ven
Van de Ven has only just joined Tottenham and has faced some tough opposition in United and Brentford.
If he had a couple of shaky moments, which Nicol has suggested, that is more than understandable.
All in all, the Dutchman needs to be given time to settle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before being written off.
Perhaps a new central defender arriving could help Spurs, especially if Davinson Sanchez or Eric Dier leave the club, for example. However, up front arguably needs to be Postecoglou’s priority right now.
Tottenham have, of course, sold Harry Kane and are yet to replace him. Richarlison is filling in for now, but some supporters will have their concerns about the Brazilian.
He was far from prolific last season, scoring just once in 27 Premier League appearances.
Up front, then, probably has to be the biggest worry for Tottenham and Postecoglou at present, not Van de Ven and the rest of the Premier League outfit’s defence.
