Speaking on the BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily Podcast, Clinton Morrison has given his view on Antonio Conte’s recent comments on Eric Dier.

Conte, somewhat remarkably, claimed that Eric Dier could grow into one of the best centre-backs in the world in the future, and while it’d be nice to see Dier get to that level, Morrison doesn’t think it’s likely.

Indeed, Morrison said the only negative thing he had to say about Conte so far was his view of Dier.

What’s been said about Dier?

Morrison gave his view on Spurs and Dier.

“They’ve got a great chance of finishing in the top four. I still think he needs to bring a few players in, I don’t know if Ashley will agree as a defender, but I don’t think Tottenham are brilliant defensively. When I heard him say the other day, and it’s the only negative thing I have to say about Conte, and I’m not being disrespectful, but when he said Eric Dier has the potential to be one of the best in the world, I didn’t agree with that,” Morrison said.

He’s right

It’s hard to ever claim that Antonio Conte is wrong about football. After all, he’s one of the greatest tactical minds of this generation, but Eric Dier being one of the best defenders on the planet? Really?

Dier arguably isn’t even the best centre-half at Spurs, and while he’s a talented player, there’s a reason he’s only made seven appearances for England since 2019.

This isn’t a player who is still learning his trade. Dier made his 300th appearance for Spurs earlier this week, and there isn’t that much room for further improvement.

Can Dier get better under Conte? Of course he can, but can he become one of the best in the world? Well, it’s unlikely.
