Lee Dixon has admitted that he isn’t a ‘massive fan’ of attacking players being named as captain and tipped Kieran Tierney to skipper Arsenal in the future.
Debate is raging right now over who should captain Arsenal.
Alexandre Lacazette has taken over the role on an interim basis following Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang being stripped of the honour.
Tierney played a prominent role in helping Celtic to a treble treble success prior to joining the Gunners in a £25 million deal under Unai Emery.
And he certainly seems like one of the few leaders in Mikel Arteta’s squad.
Dixon, who won league titles at Arsenal, believes that the Scotland left-back will wear the armband at some point – but is unsure whether or not he’ll replace Aubameyang.
He told The Mail: “I’m not a massive fan of having forwards as captains. It doesn’t sit right with me. I think Tierney is the future captain, but I’m not sure if now is the right time.”
Material
One look at Tierney at London Colney ought to illustrate that he’s captain material.
No matter what the weather – sun, rain or snow – the 24-year-old is invariably dressed in just a short-sleeved training shirt and shorts.
No snood, gloves or leg warmers, a philosophy that he borrowed from legendary Cetlc man Scott Brown, one of the club’s most successful captains.
That stoicism is what you want from an Arsenal captain and Dixon is right – he will wear the armband and perhaps even as Aubameyang’s successor.
