Jamie Carragher has taken to Twitter to set the record straight after Darren Bent revealed he tried to convince him to join Liverpool back in 2010.
Bent told talkSPORT that Carragher had tried to convince him to move to Anfield following the striker’s stunning debut campaign with Sunderland, in which he hit 25 goals.
The ex-England international said: ‘Carragher had a conversation [with me] about coming to Liverpool. It wasn’t a conversation like, ‘we need to get you there’, it was kind of like, ‘it would be good if you came, you did really well in your first season, you’re probably a little bit too expensive for us’.’
However, Carragher tweeted the truth shortly after.
The Sky Sports pundit wrote the following on his Twitter account.
If Bent had made the move to Anfield in the summer of 2010, who knows how Roy Hodgson’s time at Liverpool would’ve gone.
Appointed on July 1st 2010 following Benitez’s exit, the ex-England manager didn’t really aid his chances of success with his work in the market.
Hodgson signed Danny Wilson, Joe Cole, Christian Poulsen, Brad Jones, Raul Meireles and Paul Konchesky, but none of them were in the form Bent was in.
As aforesaid, Bent had just hit 25 goals for Sunderland. He went on to score another 20 the following term, a season in which Hodgson floundered and only lasted until January.
If an in-form striker such as the ex-Aston Villa frontman had been handed to him, who knows if the current Crystal Palace boss would’ve been a success on Merseyside.
