Speaking on the Ornstein & Chapman Podcast, West Brom journalist Steve Madeley has given an update on the Baggies’ transfer plans this month.

West Brom have already been active this window, signing Robert Snodgrass and shipping Charlie Austin out to QPR, and they’ve also been linked with a number of other moves.

Two players they have reportedly been interested in are Everton’s Cenk Tosun and Crystal Palace’s Mamadou Sakho, and Madeley has shared the latest on the Baggies’ pursuit of those two.

“I’m led to believe that there have been enquiries for both of those players, but equally, what we were hearing last week was that both were fairly unlikely,” Madeley said.

“Especially Sakho, purely on finances, I think his weekly wages are very much into six-figures, which would be very much above what West Brom’s top earners are on at the moment, and unless Palace were willing to subsidise that to get him out, then it would be a difficult deal to do.

“Realistically, Palace aren’t too far clear of the relegation battle themselves, why would they spend their own money helping out a relegation rival?”

Unfortunately, it seems as though neither of those players will be turning up at West Brom anytime soon.

The sad reality is that these are two very well-paid players, and the Midlands outfit simply can’t afford deals to bring them in.

Of course, if Palace or Everton choose to subsidise a part of their wages, the deals could end up back on the table, but right now, it doesn’t seem as though there is much chance of them playing their football at The Hawthorns anytime soon.
