Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter in anger after the club announced that Juan Foyth had been sold to Villarreal.

What’s the story?

Well, the 23-year-old spent the 2020/21 season on loan with Unai Emery’s side, where he won the Europa League after beating Manchester United.

After he made 32 appearances in all competitions, Villarreal have decided to activate their option to buy Foyth.

Tottenham’s announcement does not specify a fee. However, Diario Olé believe Tottenham have made £12.9 million from his exit.

Understandably, the Spurs fans are not happy about this.

Considering Foyth cost Spurs £8 million when Mauricio Pochettino signed him from Estudiantes, £12.9 million doesn’t represent much of a profit.

Additionally, the 12-cap Argentina international is still so young, and has the potential to become an outstanding defender.

Why Tottenham included such a low option to buy is truly baffling.

Loaning Foyth out wasn’t up for debate.

The South American wasn’t getting enough game time in north London, and needed action to aid his development.

However, Tottenham have really messed this one up, to say the least.

What should’ve happened is this.

Spurs shouldn’t have included an option to buy at all, just in case Foyth’s performances ended up making him worth far more than the set sum – that is exactly what happened.

Emery was probably rubbing his hands together when he found out he could have such a promising talent for just £12.9 million.

After such a solid campaign on loan, Foyth could’ve come back and staked a claim for a first-team place, in our view.

Failing that, Daniel Levy could’ve potentially commanded £20 million or more for the Argentine, who surely won many admirers with his displays for Villarreal.

Unfortunately, Foyth is no longer Tottenham’s property.

Let’s see how the Spurs fans on Twitter took the news…
