Alisson picked one hell of an occasion to have his worst game for Liverpool.
The Brazilian goalkeeper, a £66 million signing in 2018, had a stinker in the Reds’ 4-1 defeat by Manchester City at Anfield this evening.
Liverpool, the reigning Premier League champions, are now 10 points behind Pep Guardiola’s side, who also have a game in hand.
City were brilliant throughout but Alisson had a huge role in their victory.
First, a duffed pass from the former Roma goalkeeper led to City moving back ahead after Mo Salah had equalised for Liverpool, with Phil Foden ultimately making him pay with some brilliant play out wide to set up Ilkay Gundogan for an open goal on 73 minutes.
Three minutes later, another dreadful pass from Alisson inside his box went straight to Bernardo Silva, whose scooped cross was then headed home by Raheem Sterling.
They’re two uncharacteristic errors from the Liverpool stalwart and here’s how pundits Robbie Savage and Gary Neville reacted.
Savage said to BBC Sport: “I’m in shock. What am I watching here? What is Alisson doing? He just gives the ball to Bernardo Silva but the audacity to flick it over Alisson was magnificent.”
Neville added via Sky Sports: “He is probably the best in the world. He is having a nightmare. What is he doing? He is not under massive pressure. He passes it straight to him!”
This was a must-win game for the hosts. Victory would’ve put them within four points of the Sky Blues – who have won 14 league games in a row – but now you have to imagine that the title is gone for Liverpool.
