‘I’m hearing’: Fabrizio Romano claims Tottenham were interested in Manchester United signing

Tottenham Hotspur were interested in signing Manchester United new boy Rasmus Hojlund during the summer transfer window.

That is according to Fabrizio Romano, who has been speaking on his YouTube channel.

Tottenham enquired about signing Rasmus Hojlund

Romano claims that Tottenham asked for information on Rasmus Hojlund in July when he was still at Atalanta, but a move failed to materialise with Harry Kane’s transfer to Bayern Munich not yet completed, while the player’s focus was on joining United.

On Spurs’ interest in the striker, the Italian journalist said: “There is another club, an English club, and that club, from what I’m hearing, is Tottenham. Tottenham, in July, asked for information for Rasmus Hojlund, so they wanted to be informed of the conditions of the deal, the conditions of the deal also on the player side.

“But it was not possible to proceed. First of all, Kane was not sold yet to Bayern and so Hojlund to Tottenham was only possible in case they sold Kane to Bayern, something that happened later in the window in August, not in July. It was the month when they asked for information on Rasmus Hojlund.

“But it’s also important to mention that for the player, in that moment, it was something like, ‘Let me focus on United because my dream move is to Manchester United.’ “

In the end, Tottenham did not sign anyone to directly replace Kane, though that has not stopped them from starting the season well.

Ange Postecoglou’s men recently beat Burnley 5-2 to move to second in the Premier League and just two points behind leaders Manchester City.

Rasmus Hojlund could have been a good replacement for Harry Kane

Hojlund is obviously a young forward with a lot of talent. He could develop into a top striker in the near future.

“He’s a strong number nine,” Christian Eriksen was quoted as saying by TNT Sports when discussing his team-mate.

Ultimately, Hojlund was not a bad name for Tottenham to consider as they weighed up bringing in a successor to Kane.

With the 20-year-old now at United, though, that successor is going to have to be someone else.

Tottenham are coping without having a real prolific No.9 at present, but you would still expect Postecoglou to sign a new striker eventually. If Spurs want to challenge the likes of City and their north London rivals Arsenal, they may need a little bit more in attack.
