Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Ledley King has every right to be furious after Ryan Mason was made Tottenham’s interim manager ahead of him.
King is one of the only members of the coaching staff that have been kept on after the sacking of Jose Mourinho, and he would probably have been the logical choice to take over on an interim basis.
However, as we all know, Ryan Mason has taken charge between now and the end of the season, and Ferdinand believes King has every right to be annoyed by that decision, claiming that he would have resigned if he was King.
“Listen if I was Ledley King and I was coaching in the first-team under Mourinho and they made the U23 manager the replacement manager for Mourinho, who I was coaching for, and I was around the first-team every day, and they bring the 23s manager in as the interim in front of me, I’m handing in my resignation,” Ferdinand said.
“I’m saying ‘this is disrespectful, I’m not having this, it’s out of order, do you think I want to be a reserve coach for the rest of my life, I want a pathway to the first-team.’ Unless Ledley is happy in that role, and he’s said bypass me this isn’t for me, I don’t want to be the manager, but we need to hear that from Ledley to be fair.”
We don’t know what’s happened behind the scenes, but if Mason has been chosen over King, he has every right to be upset.
King is older, more experienced and probably more respected due to how good he was during his playing career.
However, as Ferdinand says, for all we know, he turned down the opportunity, but if that isn’t the case, we’d completely understand why he’d be annoyed.
