It’s fair to say that the thought of another defensive minded, Portuguese manager in the shape of Sergio Conceicao coming in to replace Nuno is not exactly filling Tottenham Hotspur fans with confidence.
Conceicao to Spurs?
The Daily Mail claim that Conceicao is admired by the Tottenham hierarchy, who are now looking to replace Nuno.
Spurs’ defeat to Manchester United at the weekend has cost Nuno his job, after just four months in charge.
Conceicao, who is now at Porto, apparently is now a contender to take over.
But Tottenham fans are fearful that he could be yet another misguided appointment from Daniel Levy and the club, if they do go after the Porto manager.
A bad fit?
Conceicao has had some success in Portugal and in the Champions League.
His combative style has earned him plenty of plaudits in European outings.
But Tottenham surely don’t need another manager whose strengths lie in defending more than attacking.
Jose Mourinho and Nuno have both struggled at Spurs, with both managers better at organising a back-line than producing stylish, attacking play.
Levy spoke on wanting a forward-thinking manager before appointing Nuno.
And if he was to turn to Conceicao next, it would only highlight some muddled thinking at the top at Spurs.
Good news for Spurs?
The good news for Spurs fans is that Conceicao’s chances of getting the job seem to be decreasing as the day progresses.
He may have admirers on the board, but Antonio Conte has now emerged firmly as Tottenham’s first choice.
There are still some final details to go, but Conte is now expected to be Tottenham’s next manager.
The fear for Levy and Spurs supporters is that until the contract is signed, it is not certain to go through.
