Ian Wright has warned Newcastle that they will have to pay more money to sign the likes of Jesse Lingard and James Tarkowski, else they will end up at a place like West Ham, as he told PL Productions (18/11/21 at 12:50 pm).
The former striker stated that as soon as the Saudi-led ownership get that one big name through their doors, then Newcastle can start bringing in the players on their wishlist.
Whilst someone like West Ham are flying in the Premier League, those in the North East, with their now big pockets, are worried about possible relegation.
The likes of Lingard, who thrived on-loan at the London Stadium last season, and Burnley’s Tarkowski are names that have been mentioned to get this ship going, as reported by the Times and by the Independent.
It will be interesting to see how the Magpies go about things in January because all eyes will be on them.
Wright shared his thoughts on Newcastle possibly signing the English duo and what it will take for them to get such deals over the line.
“You mention Tarkowski,” said Wright. “I have heard Jesse Lingard’s name being mentioned.
“What happens with a Tarkowski or a Jesse Lingard is that, as much as people will be thinking ‘oh, they are going for the money’. It’s going to have to take the money to get them there.
“James Tarkowski’s not going to go if he knows he hasn’t got someone in midfield or someone up front that he knows, ‘well, I can count on him and I can count on him, so if you are getting him then I will come’.
“They are going to have to pay a lot more money to try and get that player because, otherwise, you are going to get a ‘I can’t take that deal right now. I am going to go to West Ham, who are flying’. It’s not like West Ham won’t pay good money but Newcastle will have to pay even more.”
Eddie Howe doesn’t want to be in a situation where, come January, he is panic buying, rather than looking at the market in a sensible manner.
If the club are still in the bottom three, struggling for form and consistency then there will be a lot of worried faces around the North East.
What makes matters worse for Newcastle is that other teams now know the money they have in the bank.
As a result, they will inflate the prices for their players and demand more knowing they can pay it.
