West Ham United fans were left furious after Newcastle United were not awarded a penalty against Liverpool last night.
Injustice?
West Ham had given away a spot kick on Wednesday in their game against Arsenal when Vladimir Coufal was deemed to have upended Alexandre Lacazette in the box.
In a remarkably similar incident, Trent Alexander-Arnold brought down Ryan Fraser in the Liverpool game last night.
However, Newcastle were not awarded a penalty.
Now, Alexander-Arnold may argue that he got a touch on the ball, but he was tackling from the wrong side of the attacker, so was rather fortunate to avoid punishment.
And West Ham fans were left frustrated with what they felt were real inconsistencies in the refereeing decisions shown this week.
Insult to injury
To make matters worse for West Ham, Coufal was actually sent off after his tackle on Lacazette.
Coufal arguably actually took more of the ball than Alexander-Arnold, but he was punished for his follow through, which caught Lacazette high on the shin.
West Ham didn’t deserve much from their game at the Emirates Stadium, as they were outplayed for much of the match.
But that decision really killed the game as a contest in the final stages.
And the feelings of injustice among West Ham fans were only made to grow stronger after last night’s incident at Anfield.
