Tottenham fans are thinking ‘what could have been’ after comments from PSG defender Achraf Hakimi.
Ex-Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is now managing the thriving wing-back in Paris – but it could have been, oh so different, for both parties.
According to the £52 million player (Sky Sports), Pochettino wanted him at Tottenham ‘a few years ago’, as quoted by GFFN.
Hakimi stated: “A few years ago, he wanted me at Tottenham. He has a style of management and play which could help me progress.”
It’s not pleased Tottenham supporters because the lack of backing Pochettino had in North London doesn’t please them – and this proves it.
The season they reached the Champions League final, Daniel Levy didn’t put money on the table to bring a single player to Spurs, during both the summer and winter transfer windows.
Given that they reached the final of the biggest competition in the world then imagine what he could have achieved had he been backed and players like Hakimi were brought in.
What makes matters worse is that right-back has been an area of concern for Spurs since Kyle Walker left the club.
Kieran Trippier got better as his career progressed at the club, but it was clear that he needed better competition because Serge Aurier wasn’t providing it.
But now Spurs fans have made the point that Pochettino will be backed at PSG and he will deliver trophies for them.
In truth, he should be winning the Ligue 1 title and it should be the norm for the club because of how much they have spent over the years, compared to those in their division.
But if Pochettino is able to get over that dotted line in Europe then it will hurt that little extra for those in Tottenham colours.
Nonetheless, here is a selection of Spurs fans reacting to Hakimi’s claim:
