Liverpool defender Joel Matip has confirmed to the Liverpool Echo that he is fully fit again now.

Matip has only recently returned from injury for Liverpool, and he admits that it has taken a while for him to get back up to speed.

But, after featuring in three of Liverpool’s last four matches, he now feels at the peak of his powers again.

“You have to come back and you try to be back stronger, but of course you always need some time to get back on a good level,” Matip said.

“I am feeling good now and I am looking forward to playing a lot of games.

“The fitness and medical departments always try to improve things. We are working on different things.

“Sometimes you don’t have that much influence on it, but we are working hard to keep every player as fit as possible. This includes me and I hope to be playing as much as possible and to stay fit.”

Matip has rapidly become one of Liverpool’s most important players this season, due to their injury list.

The Cameroonian initially looked set to be a reserve player, but following injuries to Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk he has become vital to the side.

Matip is now Liverpool’s most experienced defender, and Jurgen Klopp will be doing everything in his power to ensure that the 29-year-old stays fit.

Matip’s injury record is not actually the most reliable, but he has been carefully managed this season, and Liverpool surely won’t take any chances with him.

Matip looks likely to start in Liverpool’s next game, which comes against Wolves at the weekend.
