Taxiarchis Fountas feels “extremely comfortable” at Rapid Vienna after a potential move to Rangers went up in smoke, according to Heute.

The chance to join one of the biggest and best-supported footballing institutions in Britain doesn’t come around every day.

But, while Rangers showed an interest in Fountas in September (Sport24), the £4 million-rated goal-machine never looked likely to scribble down a transfer request and force a move away from Austrian giants Rapid Vienna.

After all, the well-travelled striker is more than happy with life in Vienna, especially after his sensational form was rewarded with a first Greece call-up since 2015.

“If you are called up again after four years, you can only be happy. It’s a great honour,” says Fountas, who played for seven clubs between 2013 and 2019.

“Before I came to Vienna, my head was often not clear. At Rapid, however, I feel extremely comfortable. I have to said to myself: ‘Concentrate and work hard at 100 per cent, this is the only way to improve.’

“In a great team with lots of great colleagues, you can do your best.”

This doesn’t exactly sound like a man who was ready to give up his status as Rapid’s talisman in favour of fighting for a place alongside Alfredo Morelos, Kemar Roofe, Cedric Itten and Jermain Defoe at Ibrox.

Fountas scored 20 goals in 29 games last season and has started 2020/21 with seven in seven.
