Former Liverpool player Don Hutchison thinks Darwin Nunez will make a big impact at Anfield this season.

Darwin Nunez signed for Liverpool last summer and had quite a mixed campaign, but Hutchison, who was speaking on ESPN, thinks he will deliver in the new campaign.

It is something the Merseyside club will be hoping to see after investing so much money in him.

They paid Benfica an initial £64m fee for his signature, but that number could rise to £85m because of add-ons.

Discussing Nunez and rest of Liverpool’s forwards after watching the Reds in pre-season, Hutchison said: “Luis Diaz, the form that he’s been in, [Diogo] Jota’s been banging goals. I’m expecting big things from Darwin Nunez. [Mohamed] Salah, I’ve got Player of the Year because he steps up every single year.”

Darwin Nunez should get better

In the 2022/23 Premier League campaign, Nunez scored nine goals in 29 outings. It is not the best record but, as a forward who was arriving in a new country and division, he could have done so much worse.

On that note, the 24-year-old has had time to settle and adapt now, so you would expect him to be a bit more prolific this term. It certainly does not look beyond him.

After all, this is someone who scored 34 goals during his final season in Portugal.

Nunez certainly showed glimpses of his true quality, with Jurgen Klopp even describing him as “unstoppable” after one game last term.

Liverpool fans will be eager to see more of it, and if the Uruguay international can find some consistency, then that is some attack the Reds could have.

Alongside the likes of Salah and Diaz, Nunez could form part of a forward line that could cause real problems for teams this season if he can recapture his Benfica form.
