Arsenal fans don’t exactly appear best pleased with the news that Willian could be offered a four-year deal to join.
The Telegraph claim that Arsenal are closing in on signing Willian on a contract which will run until 2023, with an option to extend the deal by a further year.
With Willian turning 32 at the end of the week, the Brazilian could now be at Arsenal until he is on the verge of his 36th birthday.
And Arsenal fans fear that the transfer could turn out to be an expensive mistake, given Willian’s wages.
Arsenal will, of course, argue that the transfer makes perfect sense – especially in the short term.
Willian will certainly add to Arsenal’s attacking threat next term if he does join, but there is concerns over how much longer he will last at the top level.
Willian is reaching the twilight of his career, and if he does start to go downhill fast, Arsenal could risk having another high earner, who cannot contribute.
Willian scored 11 goals and claimed nine assists for Chelsea over the past campaign, and if he could recreate those figures at Arsenal he would turn out to be a valuable addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad.
