Rangers pulled off their first January signing a little earlier this week.
Well, sort of.
The Ibrox club announced in midweek that they had signed Bournemouth centre-back Jack Simpson on a pre-contract agreement.
Simpson will remain with the Championship side until June and then he’ll join up with his new Rangers team-mates in Glasgow.
The 24-year-old came through the English club’s academy and Cherries boss Jason Tindall has admitted that he’s disappointed to be seeing him leave for virtually nothing.
He said via The Scottish Sun: “I’m disappointed to see Jack go, because there’s been a lot of work that’s gone into him to develop him into the player that he is now. He’s been very patient.
“But I think when you lose players for nothing it is a blow because of the amount of time and the amount of hard work everyone puts into the player and then you just see them walk away for nothing, it is obviously a little bit disappointing.”
It’s dangerous to say Rangers have the Premiership title in the bag this season, but it looks that way.
Steven Gerrard’s side are 23 points clear of second-placed Celtic and although the latter have two games in hand, it’s still a pretty unassailable lead.
And their acquisition of Simpson has positive implications because it indicates that the Gers are already planning for next season.
For so long it was the light Blues playing catch up in Scotland. Now it’s their Old Firm rivals.
