Aston Villa fans have reacted on Twitter to Dean Smith’s statement via the LMA after his sacking on Sunday.

After five defeats on the bounce in the Premier League, Smith’s three-year tenure at his boyhood club came to the end after he got the dreaded call from Villa’s Chief Executive Christian Purslow.

Smith expressed his gratitude towards the Villa fans and how they showed ‘nothing but love and support’ to him and his family from the day he walked through their doors.

He also added that he left Villa in a ‘much better’ place than when he first arrived, which perhaps defines the job he did at the club.

Whilst there are some Villa fans who understand the 50-year-old being sacked, it is still an emotional break-up because of what he did for the club.

There hasn’t been a manager that Villa supporters have emotionally connected to before and probably won’t for a very, very long time again.

One thing that didn’t happen was those in the stands turning on Smith, whether it’s during the home games or on the road.

That was probably an indicator that he still had the support of the fanbase, even though things were going horribly wrong on the pitch.

But with Smith now out of the door, the Midlands outfit are on the lookout for a new coach.

This was a ruthless call by those in the boardroom, so they need to be serious by sticking their chest out and bringing someone in that is above the level of Smith, else there was no point in letting him go.

Here is a selection of Villa fans reacting to what they’re hearing from Smith after his sacking:
