Divock Origi only got a cameo for Liverpool this evening because it was against Everton.
Well, that is according to former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.
Origi came off the bench to seal the points for Jurgen Klopp’s side, scoring the Reds’ second goal of the encounter at Anfield.
In doing so, the Belgium international now has six Premier League goals against the Toffees.
And Carragher believes that Klopp only subbed him on because of his knack for scoring during Merseyside derbies.
He told Sky Sports: “I’m convinced that if Liverpool weren’t playing Everton, Origi wouldn’t have come on.”
Possible?
Well, it’s definitely plausible.
For whatever reason, Origi, who’s leaving Liverpool on a free transfer this summer, simply loves to score goals against Everton.
And no doubt that the German manager will have been aware of his striker’s form when it comes to derbies.
It’s entirely possible that Andy Robertson’s opener against the Toffees would’ve been enough to see Klopp’s side move back to within a point of Manchester City at the summit.
Before today, Origi had only managed 71 minutes of Premier League football for Liverpool this season.
So Carragher is probably right in saying that his history played a factor in Klopp’s decision to unleash him.
