Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk might’ve accidentally hit the button on the rumour mill.
Barcelona have hired Ronald Koeman as their new head coach.
The former Everton boss has left his role in charge of the Netherlands’ national team to front the repair job at Camp Nou, after Quique Setien was sacked following the humiliating 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich last weekend.
The Liverpool centre-back is familiar with Koeman due to playing under him at international level.
Here’s what Van Dijk posted on Twitter this afternoon:
With Barca being one of the biggest clubs on the planet, and one in dire need of some sort of defensive reform, you could argue that the Liverpool star would be the ideal signing this summer – and with his history with Koeman, some fans of the Premier League champions have issued him a warning on social media.
Here’s how Reds supporters responded to Van Dijk’s tweet about Koeman:
Fortunately for Liverpool fans, Van Dijk has no reason to leave.
He has just won the Premier League title, a year after helping Jurgen Klopp’s side become champions of Europe.
Most players would find it hard to reject the Camp Nou club, and for most a spell in Catalunya would be a forward step in their career, but for Van Dijk it would be a move backwards.
Liverpool are rising – Barcelona are slipping.
