Tim Sherwood told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (24/02/21 at 7:00 pm) that Tottenham’s Europa League win on Wednesday night was against a team who would be ‘League One champions at best’.
After scoring four goals in the first leg, Spurs put another four on the board against Wolfsberger, who ended up losing 8-1 on aggregate.
In truth, the Austrian side didn’t really threaten Tottenham, who were able to rest, rotate and bring in some youngsters during both fixtures.
But ex-Premier League boss Sherwood openly admitted that he was being ‘very disrespectful towards Wolfsberger, as he issued these brutal words after Tottenham’s win last night.
“The competition starts now, doesn’t it,” said Sherwood. “Very weak competition. I mean Wolfsberger, probably League One champions, at best.
“I am being very disrespectful to them I know that. But Jose would know that. But you have got to beat what’s in front of you and they have had an easy run-up to now. I think the competition starts now.”
Tottenham had a job to do, and not only have they done it, but they have done it in style, as was proven by Dele Alli’s wonder goal.
A lot of these players, such as Alli, Gareth Bale and the defence, have been provided with some much-needed confidence, minutes and a boost for their Premier League form, or lack of it.
If that can transcend onto the Premier League stage then Mourinho’s life will be made a lot easier because away from the domestic and European competitions, questions are being asked.
